Punjab Cabinet approves heavy fines, license suspension over traffic violations

Punjab Cabinet has approved big increase in fines over traffic violations on Wednesday, reported 24NewsHDTV Channel. According to proposed legislation approved by the Cabinet, motorcyclists will now have to pay a challan of Rs 2,000 for each violation. The maximum fine for violating the rules has been increased to Rs 20,000. 

For each traffic rules violation, 2 to 4 points will also be deducted and after violations of 20 points in a year, the license will be suspended for minimum 2 months to maximum 1 year. Earlier, fines ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 500 were being collected for violations. 

Now over speeding on vehicles larger than 2,000cc will attract a fine of Rs 20,000 besides a deduction of 4 points. 

The violation of traffic signal will attract a fine of up to 15,000 and 4 points will also be deducted for violation of traffic signal. The officials said fine for overloading will be up to 15,000. 4 points will also be deducted for overloading, officials said. 

Fine for violating one-way will be up to 15,000. After approval from the cabinet, a bill to amend the laws will be presented in the Legislative Assembly.
