A report submitted by the Punjab Special Branch has highlighted significant economic impacts across the province following the recent increase in petroleum prices, with transport fares and essential commodities witnessing sharp rises, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Monday.
Based on a survey conducted in 38 districts, the report noted that inter-city bus fares recorded an average increase of 30 per cent, while freight charges surged by up to 32 per cent. In Lahore, inter-city transport activity declined by around 30 per cent, reflecting reduced passenger movement amid higher fares.
The situation appeared more severe in Faisalabad, where bus fares increased by as much as 40 per cent. Similarly, fares for Mazda trucks rose between 12 to 50 per cent, while large trailer charges jumped by 13 to 100 per cent. Oil tanker fares also saw an increase ranging from 17 to 67 per cent.
The report further revealed that the number of passengers dropped by 10 to 63 per cent due to higher travel costs, while bus operations in several districts were reduced by 27 to 71 per cent.
Prices of essential commodities also climbed sharply, with an average increase of 25 per cent recorded across districts. Tomato prices witnessed the steepest surge, rising by up to 125 per cent, while rates of potatoes, onions and other daily-use items also increased. However, flour prices remained largely stable in most areas, according to the report.
Officials said the findings have been shared with the provincial government to assess the situation and consider possible measures to mitigate the impact on the public.
