Britney Spears will not be making a surprise return to the MTV Video Music Awards next month, despite swirling rumours online.
The 43-year-old Pop icon, who last performed at the VMAs in 2016, was never approached by MTV or listed as a potential performer for the September 7 show at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, according to TMZ sources.
“There are no plans in motion behind the scenes,” the insider confirmed, shutting down speculation that Spears might take the stage once again.
While some fans hoped for a surprise comeback, others weren’t surprised by the update.
Many took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to support the Grammy-winning artist’s continued break from the industry.
“She did say she was done with the music industry,” wrote one fan.
“She’s worked very hard and suffered a lot at the hands of the industry. She deserves to just enjoy life.”
Another user echoed the sentiment, tweeting: “How many times does she have to tell y’all she’s DONE?”
Britney has been vocal in recent years about her disillusionment with the music world, especially in light of her 13-year conservatorship, which ended in 2021.
During that time, she released four albums, served as a judge on The X Factor, and headlined a demanding Las Vegas residency all while under strict legal control.
Though her fans have long wished to see her reclaim the stage, many now believe she owes nothing more to the industry that controlled her for over a decade.
Her past appearances at the VMAs have become iconic pop culture moments. From her 1999 duet with *NSYNC and then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake to her unforgettable 2001 snake performance of “I’m a Slave 4 U,” Spears helped define an era of music television.
In 2003, she made headlines for her on-stage kiss with Madonna, a moment that overshadowed even Christina Aguilera’s participation in the same performance.
But not all her VMAs moments were celebrated: her 2007 comeback performance of “Gimme More” received harsh reviews, with many critics calling it lackluster.
More recently, Britney’s presence has shifted to social media, where she occasionally posts snippets of herself singing. Earlier this week, she shared then deleted, a video of her singing Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” without Auto-Tune.
She also recently performed a few lines of Where Is Love from the musical Oliver!
Aside from music, Spears has other projects in the pipeline. She’s preparing to launch her first jewelry brand, B. Tiny, and is reportedly involved in the early development of a fully authorized biopic with Universal Pictures. The studio has already purchased the rights to her bestselling 2023 memoir The Woman in Me and her music catalogue.
