The Lahore High Court has ordered the exhumation of a young man’s body for medical examination to determine the cause of his death, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Wednesday.
Justice Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan presided over the hearing on the application filed by the deceased’s father, Muhammad Yaqoob, who sought a court order to exhume his son’s grave and conduct a post-mortem.
Yaqoob submitted to the court that the body of his 30-year-old son, Mehmood Hassan, was found on April 13, 2025, at the dera (residence) of a man named Abbas Gujar.
According to Yaqoob, the family buried Mehmood in haste after offering funeral prayers without conducting any post-mortem to determine the cause of death.
However, suspicions arose later, prompting him to file a formal application with the SHO of the Kahna Police Station on April 17, 2025, requesting an investigation into the circumstances of his son’s death.
The case took a complicated legal route after a judicial magistrate of Model Town rejected Yaqoob’s request for exhumation on May 23, 2025, citing the absence of a registered criminal case.
Yaqoob then approached the Sessions Court, which set aside the magistrate's decision and, on July 12, 2025, ordered the exhumation to allow for a medical investigation.
In response, Abbas Gujar—at whose dera the body was found—filed a petition in the Lahore High Court challenging the Sessions Court's decision.
During the latest hearing, however, the Lahore High Court upheld the need for uncovering the truth behind Mehmood Hassan’s death.
The court ordered the exhumation of the body to enable a medical examination, siding with the petitioner’s request to determine the cause of death through lawful and scientific means.
