The likely disqualification of 26 members of the Punjab Assembly (MPAs), belonging to the PTI, has again raised its head as the PML-N MPAs are holding consultations with lawyers on whether to challenge Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan’s ruling in the Lahore High Court (LHC) or the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court (SC), reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
PML-N’s Iftikhar Chachar, Amjad Ali Javed and Malik Ahmad Saeed will challenge the speaker’s ruling so that the matter could be settled once and for all.
MPA Chachar has said that now the court will decide whether the reference, seeking the disqualification of the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, was legal. “If that was right, then 26 PTI MPAs should also stand disqualified,” he said, and added, “It needs to be established whether the verdict given by the former chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar was in line with the law and the constitution.”
It was not, the PML-N MPA went on to say, that the disqualification of the PTI MPAs was being sought. “What is at stake is the sanctity of the decision of the Supreme Court,” Chachar opined.
He lamented that it was unfortunate that the ex-CJP, through his verdict, disfigured the constitution.
