Jailed former foreign minister of Pakistan Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Thursday he has heard about the letter written by former prime minister Imran Khan to the army chief, but he has not seen it.
Speaking to media persons inside Adiala Jail, Qureshi said the letter should be taken in a positive light if the intention was to resolve the issues. He said that Khan wanted to resolve the issues. He said that Khan explained the causes of the prevailing crisis in the country and gave suggestions to address it therefore it should be taken positively. He said that he was committed to giving Khan honest suggestions regardless of the fact that he likes or disregards his suggestions.
Responding to a question, Qureshi said that national consensus was need for reforms in the country. He said that no individual had the ability to steer the country out of this crisis. He urged the political leadership to think with a cool head and work to mitigate hatred and bridge the gulf between the government and the opposition. He said there was a need to forget and move on. He said that first Pakistan split into two in 1971 and now it was sinking.
He said that all political parties should develop a consensus on appointment of an independent election commission. He said the election commission should be capable of holding a free and fair election. Like people remember Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for giving the country the 1973 Constitution, he said, people will remember President Asif Ali Zardari for disfiguring the constitution. He said the was complete innocent in the May 9 violence case.
