The third meeting of the National Wheat Monitoring Committee was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, to review progress on the implementation of the Interim National Wheat Policy.
During the meeting, the minister expressed satisfaction over the establishment of provincial implementation units in all provinces and regions, calling it a key step toward effective execution of the policy. He emphasized that strong coordination between the federation and the provinces is being ensured to strengthen implementation and achieve policy objectives.
The committee also reviewed plans for the destruction of existing wheat stocks. All provinces presented details of their available wheat reserves along with proposed strategies for stock destruction, in line with policy guidelines. Rana Tanveer Hussain said these measures are aimed at better market management and preventing distortions.
Briefing the committee, the minister stated that strategic wheat stocks under the National Wheat Policy will be acquired through the private sector. He added that wheat procurement in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan will also be carried out through private sector participation, promoting transparency and efficiency in the system.
Rana Tanveer Hussain reiterated that the core objective of the National Wheat Policy is to protect farmers from price volatility and ensure stability in wheat prices. He noted that the policy has been designed with a focus on food security, price balance, and the creation of a fair and competitive market.
The minister said that greater private sector involvement, coupled with improved federal-provincial coordination, will help establish a sustainable and balanced wheat market in the country. He expressed confidence that effective implementation of the policy will benefit farmers, consumers, and the overall agricultural economy.
