Pop superstar Katy Perry gave fans quite a scare during the Sydney stop of her Lifetimes Tour when a dramatic onstage mishap halted the performance.
The incident occurred midway through her high-energy set at Qudos Bank Arena yesternight, where thousands of fans had gathered to witness the global icon’s much-anticipated return to Australia.
Perry, 40, was performing her hit single ‘Dark Horse’ when a technical malfunction with the stage lift caused her to stumble and nearly fall.
According to eyewitnesses, the platform she was standing on suddenly jerked and malfunctioned, leaving Perry momentarily off balance and visibly shaken.
Security and stage crew rushed to assist, and the concert was paused for several minutes. Fans reported hearing a loud mechanical noise just moments before the platform shuddered beneath her feet.
“She looked shocked but handled it like a pro,” one attendee told local media. “She smiled, laughed it off, and made a quick joke once the stage was fixed.”
Katy, known for her vibrant stage presence and connection with her audience, quickly regained composure and addressed the crowd.
“Well, that was unexpected! Guess this tour really is full of surprises,” she said with a laugh, drawing cheers and applause.
Despite the frightening moment, Perry resumed the show with her trademark energy, continuing with a powerful performance.
Representatives for Katy Perry later confirmed in a statement that the singer was not injured and that the malfunction was being investigated.
“Katy is perfectly fine and grateful for the quick action of her crew. The rest of the tour will proceed as scheduled,” the statement read.
Last month, Katy Perry experienced a wardrobe malfunction in Las Vegas as the Roar singer was belting out one of her chart-topping hits in a high-energy set.
Videos shared by concertgoers on social media show Perry laughing off the mishap with her trademark sense of humour, while quickly turning away from the crowd and attempting to fix the malfunction with help from backup dancers and stage crew.
Despite the unexpected moment, the Grammy-nominated artist continued her performance, keeping the crowd energised and entertained throughout the show.
This isn’t the first time the Teenage Dream singer has dealt with on-stage surprises, but she has consistently embraced such moments with humour and confidence, further solidifying her status as a seasoned performer.
The singer is currently well into her mammoth 84-date tour, launched following the release of her poorly received and arguably ill-conceived seventh studio album, 143.
She rose to fame in 2008 with the release of I Kissed a Girl, which topped charts worldwide. Her 2010 album Teenage Dream made history, producing five No 1 singles, a record she shares with Michael Jackson.
She has sold over 100 million records globally, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Perry is also known for her colourful, cartoonish fashion and elaborate stage shows.
