Voting began on Tuesday in the Sindh Assembly for the Senate by-election to fill the seat left vacant by the demise of PPP Senator Taj Haider, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The polling process commenced after Election Commission officials arrived at the Sindh Assembly early in the day and officially turned the assembly hall into a polling station.
Provincial Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan is supervising the entire election process.
The contest is primarily between Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s Waqar Mehdi and MQM-Pakistan’s Nighat Mirza.
According to reliable sources, PPP holds a clear numerical advantage with 116 members, compared to MQM-Pakistan's 36 votes.
Opposition parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), have boycotted the by-election, alleging procedural concerns.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also reached the assembly and will cast his vote for the Senate seat, as per the channel's report.
The by-election has drawn significant attention due to the ruling party’s dominance in the assembly and the absence of opposition participation.
