The Punjab government has issued a notification regarding the retirement of Prisons Inspector General (IG) Mian Farooq Nazir, who will step down on June 15 upon reaching the age of 60 after completing his service tenure.
A separate notification has also been issued regarding the retirement of the Punjab chief secretary.
Officials said the process to appoint a new Prisons IG will be initiated, with several senior officers in contention for the top post. Those being considered include Mian Mubashir Ahmed Khan, Abdul Rauf Rana, Kokub Nadeem Warraich and Mian Salik Jalal, who is being viewed as a strong contender.
During his tenure, Mian Farooq Nazir introduced a range of reforms aimed at improving prison conditions and inmate welfare across Punjab. Under his leadership, inspections of 44 prisons were carried out, resulting in enhanced security measures, improved cleanliness standards and expanded opportunities for educational and correctional activities for prisoners.
Authorities said his efforts led to better control over the use of mobile phones inside prisons and an increase in medical facilities for inmates, contributing to positive changes in their lives.
Mian Farooq Nazir served as Prisons IG for a cumulative period of 10 years across different tenures, with his most recent appointment made on March 2, 2023, during the caretaker government.
