Zoya Nasir is using her social media influence for a meaningful cause as the country witnesses a renewed wave of Basant celebrations after nearly two decades.
Zoya reshared an important public service announcement on her Instagram story, originally created by @bnuanimalclub, Beaconhouse National University’s animal welfare society.
The message carried a clear and urgent warning amid the ongoing kite-flying festivities: “DO NOT LEAVE YOUR STRINGS BEHIND!” The graphic urges people to responsibly cut, collect, and dispose of kite strings instead of leaving them scattered on rooftops, streets, or trees.
It ends with a powerful reminder: “Do not let this string be an animal’s last meal.” By amplifying the message, Zoya highlighted the often ignored dangers kite strings pose to animals, birds, and even humans.
Discarded as manjha, a chemical coated string, has historically caused severe injuries and fatalities. Birds often get entangled mid-flight, stray animals consume the strings, and loose lines stretched across roads have tragically harmed motorcyclists in the past.
Animal welfare groups and activists have therefore been urging celebrants to enjoy Basant safely and consciously. The timing of the post is particularly significant. After almost 20 years of restrictions, Basant has made a visible comeback in parts of Pakistan, especially in Lahore.
Rooftops across the city have once again come alive with colorful kites, traditional music, desi food, yellow outfits, and nostalgic energy. Families, friends, and celebrities alike have been sharing moments of celebration on social media, embracing the festival as a symbol of cultural revival and joy.
While many stars are posting vibrant Basant reels and rooftop dances, voices like Zoya’s are reminding the public that joy should not come at the cost of life.
