The Motorway Police on Wednesday announced the closure of sections of Motorways M4 and M5 due to dense fog, in order to ensure safety of road users.
According to Syed Imran Ahmed, spokesperson for the Motorways Police Central Region, the M4 motorway from Khanewal to Multan has been closed because of poor visibility caused by fog. In addition, the M5 motorway near Zahir Peer has also been shut to traffic under similar conditions.
Syed Imran Ahmed said the decision to close the motorways was taken to protect the lives and property of the public, as driving in foggy conditions significantly increases the risk of accidents. He warned that lane violations during fog can lead to dangerous and sometimes fatal collisions.
The Motorway Police advised road users to strictly follow lane discipline and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of dense fog. Commuters were urged to plan their journeys during safer daylight hours, noting that travel between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm is generally safer when fog conditions prevail.
Drivers were also instructed to use fog lights, avoid overspeeding, and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to reduce the risk of accidents.
For further guidance and assistance, the Motorway Police have advised the public to contact the helpline at 130.
