Pakistani-origin politicians have made history in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with the top two city leadership positions now held by members of the diaspora, 24NewsHD reported.
On January 5, Sunbul Siddiqui from Karachi was elected Mayor of Cambridge for the third consecutive term (2024–2026), while Burhan Azeem from Burewala became the city’s youngest Deputy Mayor.
Sunbul Siddiqui, a lawyer by profession, has been active in American politics since her first election to the Cambridge City Council in 2017.
She previously served two terms as Mayor from 2020 to 2024 and is the first Muslim and Asian woman in Massachusetts history to be elected Mayor for three consecutive terms.
Burhan Azeem, son of Prof Munir Chaudhry from Punjab’s Burewala, is an engineer from MIT Boston.
He has previously been elected as Cambridge’s youngest councilor and, after securing a second term, has now made history as the city’s youngest Deputy Mayor.
