Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney has received a much-needed career boost as her recent thriller The Housemaid has officially been greenlit for a sequel, following its unexpected success at the global box office.

According to international media reports, the 28-year-old actress will reprise her role in the sequel titled The Housemaid’s Secret, which is based on the second novel from author Freida McFadden’s bestselling trilogy. Director Paul Feig is also set to return, signaling strong confidence from the studio in the franchise’s future.

The first film has emerged as a surprise hit, earning an impressive $133 million worldwide in under three weeks, despite being made on a relatively modest budget of $35 million. Critics praised the movie for reviving the suspense-driven storytelling style popular in 1980s and 1990s thrillers, further strengthening its word-of-mouth success.

The film’s positive reception has come at a crucial time for Sweeney, who had faced a challenging period marked by consecutive box office disappointments. Over the past two years, several of her projects failed to perform as expected, raising questions about her commercial viability in leading roles.

Beyond box office struggles, the actress also found herself at the center of controversy last year due to a fashion campaign that sparked widespread online debate. While Sweeney later clarified her position and distanced herself from the interpretations surrounding the campaign, the episode placed her under intense public scrutiny.

Despite these challenges, The Housemaid appears to have restored momentum to her career. Industry analysts believe the sequel announcement reinforces Sweeney’s standing in Hollywood and positions her for stronger roles in the coming years.

Fans are also eagerly awaiting her return in the third season of HBO’s acclaimed series Euphoria, which originally propelled her to international fame.

In addition, she is reportedly being considered for a major role in an upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese sci-fi franchise Gundam, though no official confirmation has been made.

While it remains unclear whether co-star Amanda Seyfried will return for the sequel, actor Michele Morrone is expected to reprise his role.
