Germany’s Alexander Zverev captured his first Grand Slam title on Sunday, defeating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in a dramatic five-set final to win the French Open at Roland Garros, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday.
Playing in the fourth Grand Slam final of his career, the third-seeded German overcame Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 in a match that lasted more than four hours.
The victory ended years of disappointment for Zverev, who had previously lost all three of his major finals and was often regarded as one of the best players never to win a Grand Slam title.
With top rivals Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz absent from the opposite side of the net, Zverev seized a rare opportunity to claim the biggest title of his career on the red clay of Roland Garros.
After Cobolli missed an overhead shot on Zverev’s second championship point, the German collapsed onto the court in celebration.
Overcome with emotion, he lay on the clay with his face covered by his hands before rising to acknowledge the crowd.
