For the second consecutive month, Karachi’s electricity consumers have been denied full relief in their monthly fuel cost adjustment, reported 24NewsHD TV Channel on Friday.
According to the report, despite a calculated adjustment of Rs 5 per unit (pu) for December, Nepra only approved a reduction of Rs 3 per unit, leaving KE consumers deprived of Rs 2 per unit in savings.
Adjustment dispute continues
Nepra had earlier approved a Rs2.12 per unit reduction for the rest of the country, but Karachi was given a Rs3 per unit reduction.
However, as per KE’s own request, the December adjustment should have resulted in a Rs4.95 per unit decrease.
Nepra’s internal calculations suggested that a Rs5 per unit reduction was due, but the full relief was not passed on to consumers.
Similarly, for November’s adjustment, KE had requested a Rs4.98 per unit reduction, but Nepra only allowed Rs1.23 per unit relief, despite an actual calculation of Rs5 per unit adjustment.
Opposition within Nepra
Nepra’s Member Tariff, Mazhar Niaz Rana, had opposed the decision to deny full relief to KE consumers. He argued that KE customers should have received the complete Rs 5 per unit reduction instead of the lesser adjustments approved in both November and December.
Nepra issued an official notification yesterday (March 6) approving the Rs3 per unit reduction for KE customers.
