Prisoners in Punjab jails have participated in the general elections to be held on February 8, 2024, by using postal ballot.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, out of 60940 prisoners in the jails of Punjab, 2723 applied for voting rights and 1118 successfully cast their votes. The remaining postal ballots were either not received or returned due to the release of some prisoners from prison.
The Election Commission of Pakistan said that the voting process was conducted in a secret and transparent manner, following the prescribed procedure. The results of the postal ballot will be announced by the commission after the elections.
The commission also warned against the spread of fake and baseless information on social media regarding the voting by the prisoners, and urged the public to ignore and discourage such propaganda.
