The Punjab government has launched a special cyber patrolling operation ahead of Muharram-ul-Haram, stepping up efforts to curb the spread of hate speech, provocative content, and material that could disrupt public order during the religious observance, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday.
Officials said teams assigned to cyber surveillance would remain active around the clock, monitoring various social media platforms for content deemed controversial, inflammatory, or offensive to religious sentiments.
According to the sources, personnel from the Safe City Authority, police, and other law enforcement agencies are jointly conducting online monitoring as part of broader security measures aimed at maintaining peace and harmony during Muharram.
Officials said more than 5,000 social media pages, accounts, and websites involved in sharing objectionable or hate-related content have already been blocked as part of the campaign.
The authorities warned that individuals found uploading or sharing material that incites hatred, promotes sectarian tensions, or hurts religious sentiments could face legal action under relevant laws.
Officials also urged social media users to act responsibly and ensure that content shared online complies with legal requirements, ethical standards, and respect for religious sensitivities.
