Police in Islamabad arrested ten women who were protesting in connection with International Women’s Day, citing a violation of Section 144 imposed in the federal capital, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.

According to the report, among those detained were organisers and participants of the demonstration, including prominent human rights activist Dr Farzana Bari.

The protest had been organised to mark International Women’s Day and to raise awareness about women’s rights and related social issues.

Following their arrest, the women were taken into custody and later shifted to a women’s police station in the capital.

According to the police, Section 144 is currently in force in Islamabad, prohibiting all kinds of public gatherings, demonstrations and protests.

Authorities stated that the women were taken into custody because they held a protest despite the restrictions imposed under the law.

Police officials maintained that the action was taken in line with regulations aimed at maintaining public order in the capital.
