Renowned Actor‑turned‑politician Vijay Thalapathy, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), addressed a growing wave of public and media attention around his personal life on Saturday, urging his supporters not to be disheartened by recent controversies linked to his family.

The 51‑year‑old star, whose wife Sangeetha Sornalingam filed for divorce earlier this year after more than 25 years of marriage, spoke at a TVK event in Mamallapuram to mark International Women's Day, focusing mainly on political promises and welfare plans for women ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

In his address, Vijay touched briefly on the legal dispute with his wife, saying, “There are some issues running around in the recent past… I know many of you are hurt, I will take care of that.” He appealed to party cadres not to let the situation distract them from their work for the public.

The statement came amid widespread speculation and discussions on social media about his personal life, following the divorce petition and viral footage of his public appearances, including a recent wedding reception where he was seen with actress Trisha Krishnan  a pairing that reignited rumors and online chatter.

Court documents show that Sangeetha, Vijay’s wife since 1999, filed for divorce in the Chengalpattu District Court, citing irretrievable breakdown of marriage, allegations of an extramarital relationship involving a female actor, and emotional cruelty. She has also filed an interim plea to continue residing in the couple’s Neelankarai home until the case is resolved, citing lack of alternative accommodation.

The couple has two adult children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Saasha. The next court hearing is scheduled for April 20, 2026.

Despite the personal turbulence, Vijay used the International Women’s Day event to unveil a series of women‑centric welfare schemes his party is pitching ahead of the elections. These include monthly financial aid, free LPG cylinders, and incentives such as gold and silk sarees as wedding gifts for women, among other proposals aimed at empowerment and safety  a significant part of his election platform.
