The deadlock between the Balochistan government and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) over the madrassa registration issue eased on Thursday after successful negotiations, leading to the postponement of the party’s protest movement until May 20.
Addressing a press conference in Quetta, JUI provincial chief Maulana Abdul Wasi said tensions had persisted between the government and the party over madrassa-related matters for the past 15 days.
He said JUI had observed a “historic strike” a day earlier to protest the issue.
Maulana Abdul Wasi revealed that Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti visited his residence along with a delegation to hold talks and resolve the dispute. According to the JUI leader, the chief minister apologized for his previous behaviour and assured that action would be taken against those responsible for the situation.
Abdul Wasi said the party was ready to implement the procedure for madrassa registration under the 26th Constitutional Amendment framework. He added that the chief minister assured JUI leadership that such a situation would not be repeated during his tenure in government.
The JUI provincial chief stated that Sarfaraz Bugti had requested time to get the madrassa-related bill passed through the provincial assembly and appealed to the party to postpone its protest campaign until May 20.
“We have postponed the protest till May 20, 2026,” Maulana Abdul Wasi announced, adding that dialogue remained the best way forward in politics.
“Nothing is final in politics; progress is made through dialogue,” he said.
