The opposition alliance, led by the nominated Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Senate Opposition Leader Allama Nasir Abbas on Saturday announced a nationwide movement against the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.
Addressing a joint press conference, Achakzai and Allama Nasir Abbas urged people across the country to rise up in defence of democracy and constitutional supremacy. They the movement against the 27th Constitutional Amendment will formally begin tomorrow night at 8:30 PM.
“All democratic institutions in Pakistan have been paralyzed,” said Allama Nasir Abbas. “The new constitutional measures will only strengthen the already powerful. Pakistan now stands at a dangerous turning point, similar to the one we faced in 1971.”
Calling for unity, Allama Nasir Abbas announced that supporters would raise the slogan: ‘I do not accept this constitution’ — symbolizing a call for justice, transparency, and a new dawn for the country.
Mahmood Khan Achakzai added that the movement will advance with three key slogans — “Long live democracy, down with dictatorship,” “Freedom for political prisoners,” and “Supremacy of the constitution and parliament as the true source of power.”
He further said, “We will show the rulers that the people of Pakistan can block their way if they act against the will of the nation. Whatever the people decide will be the ultimate decision.”
The opposition leaders also emphasized a policy of peaceful coexistence with neighboring countries based on equality and mutual respect.
The newly announced movement is expected to gain momentum in the coming days as opposition parties mobilize supporters across the country.
