The Australian batters struggled to put up a good show before the attack of Indian bowlers as the Aussies were at 168-8 in 43 overs, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.
However, Australia opener David Warner snatched Sachin Tendulkar's record for the fastest to reach 1,000 World Cup runs during the clash against India.
Warner achieved the landmark in 19 innings in Chennai to better Tendulkar and former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers -- both of whom got the runs in 20 outings.
The left-handed Warner smashed Hardik Pandya for a boundary to take the record after Australia elected to bat first as the cricket powerhouses opened their 2023 campaigns.
Tendulkar, an Indian batting great who retired from the game in 2013, has the highest runs -- 2,278 -- in the 50-over showpiece event.
Warner, 36, has scored over 6,000 runs in 151 ODIs and remains Australia's key to getting their sixth World Cup crown in what may be his last appearance in the tournament.
Earlier, Australia won the toss and chose to bat first in the World Cup match against India.
The match between the two teams is being played at the Chennai cricket stadium in India.
After winning the toss, Australian captain Pat Cummins said: “We’re in a really good spot. We've got a good balance between game time and being fresh.”
Indian captain expressed his views about the conditions in the ground, saying: “The conditions are there for the bowlers, slightly on the slower side, the ball will turn as the game goes on. We’ve covered all our bases. Unfortunately, Shubman didn’t recover in time. Ishan will replace him.”
The host side hopes to win the match; however, the Australian players also have a significant experience of playing on Indian pitches.
Even before the start of the World Cup, the Australian team had played a series of three ODI matches in India.
Indian opener Shubman Gill was not included in the team as he did not recover from dengue. In his place, Ishan Kishan will play with captain Rohit Sharma as an opener.
It is to be noted here that Australia played three World Cup matches in the same stadium and achieved success.
