The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in a major political development, has nominated Muhammad Sohail Afridi, a young and emerging politician from Khyber district, as the new Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), replacing Ali Amin Gandapur.
Muhammad Sohail Afridi, born on July 12, 1989, is among the youngest political figures in the provincial assembly.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and is a businessman by profession.
Afridi entered mainstream politics during the 2024 general elections, contesting as an independent candidate backed by PTI from PK-70 (Khyber-II).
His decisive victory, with 31,649 votes against Bilawal Afridi of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) who secured 7,401 votes, highlighted his strong public support and growing influence in the region.
After joining the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on February 29, 2024, Afridi quickly earned recognition for his energetic and reform-driven approach.
He was appointed as Special Assistant for Communications and Works (C&W) in August 2024 under the Gandapur-led provincial government.
His tenure in the department was marked by active involvement in infrastructure development and efforts to improve transparency in public projects.
Reports suggested that PTI’s top leadership decided to replace Ali Amin Gandapur following growing internal rifts within the party’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter.
Tensions had reportedly intensified between Gandapur and several senior figures, prompting the leadership to seek a more unifying and less controversial figure to lead the province.
Sources indicated that PTI founder Imran Khan and senior members of the party’s core committee supported Sohail Afridi’s nomination, viewing him as a symbol of renewal and youth-driven governance.
