The Punjab government has enacted new rules for the functioning of crime scene units, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.
In this regard, under the Punjab Forensic Science Authority, crime scene units will be established at divisional and district levels across the province.
Crime scene investigation officers have been given the responsibility of reaching the scene of murder, suicide, robbery, rape, terrorism and other serious crimes immediately.
The responsibility of preserving the crime scene has been imposed on the first-arriving agency, i.e. the police or other law enforcement agencies.
It has been made mandatory for the investigation officers to prepare complete photographs, videos, sketches and written records of the crime scene.
Strict rules have been laid down for packing, sealing and preserving evidence under regular procedures.
It will be mandatory to record the crime scene number, sample number, date, time, location and complete description on each evidence packet.
The evidence will be handed over to the police or the relevant agency with a formal receipt. I
t has also been made mandatory to take the signature of the officer present at the scene as a witness during the transfer.
Rules have also been made for the specific vehicles and security arrangements for the delivery of evidence.
Evidence will be preserved by establishing recovery units at divisional and district levels.
