Flooding is again feared in the River Sutlej as the water levels in Bhakra and Pong Dams of India built over the river have reached 1,642 feet and 1,376 feet, respectively, quite close to what it was in August 2023, leading to a rise in the inflow of water at Head Ghanda Singh to 16 feet, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday.
In August 2023, the water level in India’s Bhakra Dam had risen to 1,675 feet, while today it stands at 1,642 feet.
Similarly, in August 2023, the water level in Pong Dam of India had been recorded at 1,395 feet, while today it stands at 1, 376 feet.
Presently, 18,000 cusecs of water is being released into the river from Bhakra Dam, while 38,000 cusecs of water is being released into the river from Pong Dam.
The inflow of water at Head Ghanda Singh has risen to 26,500 cusecs, while at Head Sulemanki it has been recorded at 25,000 cusecs.
Similarly, the inflow and outflow of water at Head Islam has been recorded between 19,000 and 21,000 cusecs.
Erosion increases on River Indus
Meanwhile, the erosion of the River Indus in Alipur has increased following a deluge in the river.
Even super embankments are being damaged due to erosion.
On the other hand, locals have said that in case any super embankment is broken due to the erosion, the river water will even enter tehsil Alipur’s urban areas.
They have appealed to the authorities to complete the construction of embankments at the earliest so that they could be kept safe from further harm.
On the other hand, the concerned officials have said that embankments were being strengthened and the situation is being monitored.
