At least 21 people have died after two buses crashed into each other in southern Niger, the west African country's official ANP news agency reported on Saturday.
Friday's accident some 55 kilometres (35 miles) from the town of Madaoua on the road to the city of Maradi also left 37 wounded, the ANP said.
It comes as the authorities are campaigning to raise awareness about the dangers of road accidents, a frequent occurrence on the vast Sahel nation's roads.
"The provisional toll reports 21 dead and 37 wounded," who were taken to the accident and emergency departments of the hospitals of Madaoua and Maradi, the ANP said.
According to the news agency, one of the buses was carrying soldiers.
An investigation into the causes of the crash has been opened, the ANP said.
In 2025, Niger recorded more than 7,000 road accidents which killed over 1,200 people and left more than 4,400 with serious injuries, according to the Nigerien Agency for Road Safety.
Speeding, drink-driving and the poor state of both the roads and cars remain the main causes of incidents.
