Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar Friday chaired a high-level meeting on economic reforms, emphasising the pivotal role of the Planning Commission in Pakistan’s policy-making and development strategy, a spokesperson from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office said.

During the meeting, Dar highlighted the historic and central role of the Planning Commission in shaping economic and development policies.

He said the Commission should be empowered to lead strategic policy, set priorities, and effectively monitor public investment.

“The Planning Commission must function as the apex body under the direct leadership of the Prime Minister, with a dedicated policy and planning wing alongside a separate development wing,” the spokesperson quoted Dar as saying.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that all major economic decisions should align with the national economic strategy, and that clear KPIs must be established to ensure accountability, efficiency, and coherence across government operations.

He added that the Planning Commission should act as a central clearinghouse, providing guidance to ministries and divisions on policy continuity and development planning.

Dar also underscored the need for sustainable reforms to strengthen Pakistan’s economic governance.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers for Finance, Planning and Special Initiatives, and Climate Change, as well as the Minister of State for Finance and Revenue, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Secretary Planning, National Coordinator SIFC, and senior officials from relevant ministries and divisions.
