Dogbite incidents in Karachi have reached alarming levels, with 1,000 people reportedly bitten in just the first eight days of 2026, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.
According to hospital data, 1000 cases of dog bites were reported during the above-mentioned period in four hospitals of Karachi, as Jinnah Hospital reported 250 cases, Civil and Indus Hospital reported 300 cases each, and 40 new cases were reported from New Karachi Hospital.
Sindh Institute of Animal Health Director General Dr. Nazir Kulhoro said that if the government provides funds, the dog bite vaccine is likely to be manufactured locally.
Doctors advised the citizens not to use home remedies after dog bites. Mutahida Maqumi Movement (MQM) Deputy Parliamentary Leader in the Sindh Assembly Talha Ahmad said that cases of dog bites reached an alarming state.
According to data, 52,000 cases were reported last year and 21 people died due to dog bite.
Dr. Aftab Goher, in charge of the Dog Bite Clinic, stated that most cases were reported from Korangi, Hub Chowki, Baldia, Landhi, and Gadap.
A 41-year-old patient at Indus Hospital required amputation of a finger due to infection following a dog bite.
Dr. Goher warned that rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. He urged citizens to seek immediate medical attention and get vaccinated in the event of a dog bite.
This surge highlights the urgent need for awareness, vaccination, and preventive measures to contain the spread of rabies in Karachi.
