Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed to shift the high-loss electricity feeders to solar energy with the cooperation of communities and provincial governments.

He was chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad today (Friday) on solarization to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in far-flung areas of the country.

The Prime Minister said this initiative would help reduce losses of loss-making feeders and ensure continuous power supply in those areas. He instructed to immediately launch pilot projects on high-loss feeders of Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO). He emphasized that consultations with elected representatives and active community participation should be ensured to make the pilot projects successful.

The meeting was informed that converting these feeders to solar energy would help establish environmentally friendly, low-cost, and sustainable micro-grids for local populations. It was further briefed that local communities, along with provincial and federal governments, would be partners in the project.

The meeting was further apprised that the initiative would not only provide low-cost electricity but would also significantly reduce future losses of power distribution companies.

Granting in-principle approval to the project, the Prime Minister directed that work on pilot projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan be started immediately.
