Pakistan records 61% literacy rate in fiscal year 2024-25

Pakistan’s current literacy rate stands at 61 percent, says the Economic Survey of Pakistan 2024-25.

According to the survey, literacy rate among Pakistani men is 68 percent and women 52.8 percent. The number of universities in Pakistan is 269. Of these, 160 are public sector universities and 109 are private sector universities. Pakistan has allocated Rs61.1 billion for the higher education sector. The total number of PhD faculty members in Pakistan is 38.

Literacy rate among transgender persons is 40.15 percent, while this percentage is slightly higher in urban areas, i.e. 42.4 percent. Literacy rate among transgender persons living in rural areas is 32.94 percent. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has the highest literacy rate among the transgender persons, i.e. 44.67 percent. This literacy rate in the rural areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is 39.3 percent and urban areas is 48.5 percent.

Literacy rate among transgender persons in Punjab is 41.5 percent, 43.4 percent in urban areas and 34.5 percent in rural areas. In Sindh, literacy rate among transgender persons is 37.5 percent, 27 percent in the rural areas and 39.3 in the urban areas. Literacy rate among transgender persons in Balochistan stands at 25 percent, 22 percent in rural areas and 29 percent in urban areas of the province.
