Pakistan’s current installed power generation capacity stands at 46,605 MW, according to the Economic Survey 2024-25 report released on Monday.
These statistics reflect a 1.6 percent increase in power generation capacity of the country compared to 45,888 MW, which was recorded in the corresponding fiscal year FY2024-25.
The government attributed this increase to 2,813 MW generated through net metering and power generation grew by 717 MW in one year.
Pakistan’s capacity to generate power from water increased from 10,635 MW to 11,368 MW, while thermal power generation decreased from 28,766 MW to 25,937 MW.
Pakistan’s capacity to generate power from nuclear sources is 3,620 MW, while power generation from alternative sources has increased from 2,867 MW to 5,680 MW.
The percentage shares of generation capacity by source are: hydel (24.4%), nuclear (7.8%), renewable (12.2%), and thermal (55.7%).
Although thermal power remains the dominant source, its share has declined in recent years, indicating an increasing reliance on indigenous energy sources.
Out of the total electricity generation of 90,145 GWh, the combined share of hydel, nuclear, and renewable sources stood at 53.7 percent, highlighting a significant shift towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives.
In a major policy shift in 2024, Pakistan terminated Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with several Independent Power Producers (IPPs) such as HUB Power, Lalpir Power, Pakgen Power, Rousch Power, Saba Power and Atlas Power.
