Soha Ali Khan recently got candid about the intense scrutiny her sister-in-law Kareena Kapoor Khan and brother Saif Ali Khan had faced when they chose to get married.
She revealed that when the couple announced their marriage, they faced harsh criticism, including threats against their families and death.
However, despite the threats and the scrutiny, Saif and Kareena refused to back down from their decision and tied the knot in a private wedding ceremony in October 2012, regardless of the hostility.
Soha continued by saying that the criticism she faced during her own interfaith marriage with Kunal Kemmu was less severe.
When asked if she personally experienced backlash, Soha responded that she decided not to allow it to impact her.
“I don’t think it got to me because I feel like as long as the people I love and respect are on the same page as me, it’s okay. There are always going to be haters and lots of voices, and that’s fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion”, she said.
Soha recalled the ambiance surrounding Saif and Kareena's wedding, and said, “Even when Kareena and bhai got married, there were lots of strange things, Love Jihad, Ghar Wapsi, all kinds of weird headlines. You know, ‘You took one of ours, now we will take one of yours.’”
Saif had earlier revealed that Randhir Kapoor, Kareena's father, had received anonymous letters warning that the wedding venue might be targeted and threatening harm to their families.
However, Saif remained resolute, saying, “Making threats and carrying them out are two different things.”
Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore, his own parents, who had also encountered public opposition during their interfaith union in the 1960s, served as a source of inspiration for him.
