Rain in Punjab: boon for some, bane for others

A shallow westerly wave is affecting upper parts of the country and in the last two days, rain with thunderstorms in parts of Punjab turned the weather pleasant but also damaged life and property, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.

Since the start of the rain on Monday, 16 people have been killed including six family members in Okara where a roof of the house fell due to a windstorm and killed three women and three children. Another person died in Hujra Shah Muqeem while a youth was killed due to lightning in Toba Tek Singh. 

Other casualties were reported from Faisalabad where multiple incidents of roof collapsing were reported. Windstorms were also reported from Nankana Sahib while residents of the Cholistan desert also saw respite after the rain that has turned the weather pleasant in the sprawling desert.

Rain recorded  (mm) in Islamabad (City 14, Shamsabad 02, Golra 07, Bokra 07). Punjab: Murree 14, Hafizabad 12, Gujranwala 05, Mangla 01. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Balakot 10. Kashmir: Kotli 15, Garhi Dupatta 02, Muzaffarabad (City 02, Airport 01). Gilgit-Baltistan: Bagrote, Babusar 01. Sindh: Sakrand 01.

In Lahore, Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) workforce is desilting to prevent areas from urban flooding and ponding.

According to the Monsoon Control Room, Wasa Head office, the maximum rain recorded in Lahore at Jail Road was 3.7 mm. 

Met office also predicted rain-wind-thunderstorm (with few hailstorms) which is expected at isolated places in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Upper Punjab, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir and due to extreme heat, dust storm/gusty winds are expected in plain areas of the country.

Tuesday’s highest maximum temperature (°C): Sibbi 49, Padidan, Turbat 48, Jacobabad and Dadu 47.
