“I was always discouraged by my father to pursue journalism as a career in Pakistan. But back then, I was too young to understand what he meant,” shared veteran Hamir Mir in his recent interview with a ProPakistani.
He revealed that it was in his early school years that he started sending his write-ups to children’s’ pages of some Urdu dailies like Mashriq and Nawa-e-Waqt. “And we made sure the practice was kept hidden from my father."
In the candid interview, Mir shed light on his life’s journey, trials, and tribulations as a journalist. Although his journalistic tilt wasn’t favored by his father, there was no stopping him when the senior Mir passed away later in his life.
“Besides writing, I was also good at drawing so my father encouraged me to join NCA,” shared Mir.” I applied and got admission there. But, I had also simultaneously applied and was accepted at Govt College University Lahore.” Mir forewent NCA in favor of the latter and started actively contributing to the college magazine Ravi.
Mr. Waris Mir – Hamir Mir’s father – was also a veteran Pakistani journalist, writer, and academic who fought to uphold the cause of democracy and press freedom during the Martial Law periods of President General Ayub Khan and General Ziaul Haq.
Mr. Hamid Mir joined Daily Jang in his college days as a sub-editor. And then, only sky was the limit for this young and passionate journalist.
