Inflation rose to 8.98 per cent last month: Bureau of Statistics

The report of the Bureau of Statistics acknowledged an increase of more than two percent in inflation during September as the government fails to control rampant inflation.

The inflation rate rose to 8.98 per cent for the month of September in the country. Last month inflation rate was 8.58 percent in urban areas and 8.77 percent in rural areas.

During September, food prices in the cities skyrocketed, with chicken rising by 42.4 percent, onions by 32.49 per cent, flour by 9.69 percent and wheat by 7.31 per cent.

Pulses became costlier by 15.7 percent and eggs by 14.6 percent, mustard oil by 4.56 percent, vegetables by 3.9 percent, cooking oil by 3.64 percent, sugar by 3.04 percent, tea by 2.78 percent and mutton by 2 percent.

According to the statistics, inflation in rural areas was higher than in cities where chicken was 47.95 percent and onion 44.56 percent, lentils 18.45 percent, eggs 11.82 percent, flour 9.4 percent, wheat 7.0 percent, pulses 5.39 percent, mustard oil 2.17 percent and cooking oil. 3.93% more expensive.

During the same month, electricity became costlier by 11.40%, motor fuel by 1.67% and LPG by 7.22%.

In the last three months, ghee and cooking oil became 38.2 percent and 34.2 percent more expensive, while eggs became 27.66 percent more expensive.
