Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced a significant reduction in fuel prices while addressing the nation live from the federal capital, calling it part of the government’s efforts to provide relief to the public.
In his televised address, the prime minister declared a massive cut of Rs135 per litre in diesel prices and Rs12 per litre reduction in petrol prices. He said the move reflects the government’s commitment to passing on economic benefits to the people, noting that Rs129 billion had been spent for public relief.
Highlighting recent diplomatic developments, the premier said tensions in the Gulf region had eased, with warring sides now moving toward dialogue. “Those who were at war face to face till yesterday are ready for talks today,” he remarked, thanking the leadership of Iran and United States for their cooperation.
The prime minister revealed that both countries had accepted Pakistan’s proposal for a temporary ceasefire and agreed to hold peace talks in Islamabad. “The leadership of both countries is coming to Islamabad on my sincere invitation,” he said, terming it a moment of pride not only for Pakistan but for the entire Muslim world.
He credited Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts for bringing the parties to the negotiating table and expressed gratitude to Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their roles. He particularly praised General Asim Munir for working tirelessly and playing a “historic role” in facilitating dialogue.
However, the prime minister cautioned that achieving a permanent ceasefire remains the most challenging stage. He said the leadership of both countries is expected to arrive in Islamabad soon, and Pakistan will make every effort to ensure the success of the talks.
Referring to domestic challenges, Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the hardships faced by citizens due to inflation and appreciated their patience. “It is my responsibility to ensure that the benefits of price reduction reach the people,” he said.
The address combined economic relief measures with diplomatic optimism, underscoring Pakistan’s dual focus on stabilising the economy and promoting regional peace.
