Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has approved Karachi Safe City Project Phase-II, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah regarding Karachi Safe City Project Phase-II in Karachi on Friday.
The meeting was attended by Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, IG Police Javed Odho and other relevant officials.
Addressing the meeting, Murad Ali Shah said the Safe City Project is extremely important for public security and crime prevention.
Sindh Chief Minister said the safety and security of citizens’ lives and property is the primary responsibility of the government.
He said with the help of modern technology, security measures will be made more effective.
Murad Ali Shah said the project will further enhance the security, surveillance and capacity of law enforcement agencies of the city.
The effective use of technology is an important requirement of the modern era, Murad Ali Shah said.
The Chief Minister was given a detailed briefing in the meeting.
According to briefing, total of more than 2,300 smart cameras will be installed in the city under Phase II.
As many as 870 will be for general surveillance while 1,300 will be equipped with automatic number plate recognition and facial recognition, 80 will be for traffic enforcement, 56 mobile surveillance units and 8 for traffic signal monitoring.
Meeting was informed that cameras will be installed in different districts of Karachi.
As many as 322 cameras will be installed in South District, 220 in East District, 27 in Korangi, 17 in Kemari, 16 in Malir and 1 in West District.
The total cost of the project is Rs9.98 billion. The project is expected to be completed in the next 12 months, while the project will be formally launched in May 2026.
The project also includes 9 points of presence, solar and generator backup, smart surveillance tower, 50 public panic buttons, 8 response vehicles and 10 surveillance drones.
Murad Ali Shah said this is not just a development project but a significant investment in public safety and national security.
CM Sindh directed relevant agencies to expedite work and project should be completed on time because delay may increase cost.
Murad Ali Shah approved transparent and merit-based recruitment of technical staff to Sindh Safe City Authority.
Meeting also considered proposal to launch Safe City project in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas and Shaheed Benazirabad.
Project to install 780 cameras in Karachi and other divisional headquarters will cost Rs3.15 billion.
All safe city projects in the province should be run through an integrated system, namely Sindh Safe Cities Authority, Murad Ali Shah said.
He said an integrated command and control system is the only guarantee of effective security.
The safe city project will not only prove helpful in preventing crimes but will also improve traffic management and emergency services, Murad Ali Shah said.
He said the Sindh government’s commitment to making Karachi a modern, peaceful and strong economic hub will surely be fulfilled.
