Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has addressed recent rumors about his retirement from international cricket, clarifying his stance after comments made during a media interaction last week sparked speculation.
During the interaction, Sarfaraz was asked about his future, to which he responded, “Look, as far as my career is concerned. I think I don’t need to say anything. Nothing is left. I know what you are waiting for and it will happen soon.” This response led to widespread speculation that he was considering retirement.
However, in a follow-up interview with a local news channel on other day, Sarfaraz took the opportunity to clarify that he has no immediate plans to retire. Thirty-seven-year-old former skipper confirmed that he remains actively involved in cricket and is open to taking any opportunities that arise. Despite being excluded from the squad for Pakistan’s South Africa tour, Sarfaraz expressed his continued commitment to the national team.
“I’ve never demanded, ‘I want to bat here or there.’ If I am given the chance to play for the national team, I will gladly accept it,” he affirmed, emphasizing his willingness to play any role for Pakistan.
The former captain also stated that his decision to retire would be a personal one, and he would step down only when he feels he can no longer contribute to the team. “When I feel that I should quit cricket, I will quit,” he added.
Sarfaraz, who made his international debut in 2007, has been an integral part of Pakistan's cricketing team.
He has played in 54 Test matches, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20 Internationals, accumulating 6,164 runs, including six centuries and 32 half-centuries.
His leadership reached its peak in 2017 when he captained Pakistan to victory in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, defeating India by 180 runs in the final. Sarfaraz also led Pakistan to an unprecedented 11 consecutive T20I series victories, the highest for any Pakistan captain.
However, Sarfaraz's international appearances have become sporadic. His last Test appearance came in 2022 during a series against Australia, where he was dropped after scoring just seven runs.
Despite remaining part of the Test squad for series against Bangladesh and England, he found himself on the bench, eventually being released after the loss to England in the first Test.
Sarfaraz's last white-ball match for Pakistan was in November 2021, and since then, his future with the national side has remained uncertain.
