Nine buildings in Lyari evacuated, says minister

Police in Karachi on Thursday arrested 12 officials of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) in connection with illegal structures built in Lyari area of the city, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The officials, posted in district South and Lyari division, were asked to come to the Conference Room for a meeting. As soon as they arrived, the police arrested them. 

Those who were taken into custody included retired director Asif Rizvi, Irfan Naqvi, Director Industries Jalees Siddiqui, Deputy Director Lyari Asim Khan, Assistant Directors Zafar and Jehangi Khan and Building Inspector Zulfiqar Shah.

Also on Thursday, Senior Sindh Minister and Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit said that the provincial government had evacuated nine buildings in Lyari, which were in a dilapidated condition, while the 10th one was being evacuated.  

He further said that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah would today chair a high-level meeting at which he would be briefed on the crumbling structures in the province. “The affected families will be provided compensation,” he said, and added, “The new SBCA DG has directed the officers to submit their assets within 15 days.”

Memon informed that strict action would be taken against the officials who allowed the construction of illegal structures.
