The M-tag is declared mandatory for entry on motorways with effect from June 15, 2026, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
The consumers who have an old M-tag were allowed to change their M-tag till June 30, 2026.
Earlier in April 2026, the Punjab Highway Department decided to digitise all manual toll plazas across the province.
The decision was taken to eliminate overcharging and corruption and bring transparency in toll collection.
A meeting chaired by Provincial Minister for Works and Communications Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharath reviewed the digitisation of toll plazas.
Secretary C&W Sohail Ashraf; Special Secretary, Additional Secretary, Chief Engineers; and Exxon participated in the online meeting.
The provincial minister said 41 toll plazas of the Highway Department will be digitised.
Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharath said the dashboard regarding toll collection at toll plazas should be upgraded.
He said overcharging at toll plazas will not be tolerated at all.
The provincial minister reprimanded field formation officers for complaints of overcharging at toll plazas.
He directed to initiate a strict crackdown against those who overcharge and register cases against those involved.
Malik Sohaib Bharath said 41 toll plazas of the Highway Department will be provided with the M-tag facility, and transparency will be brought to vehicles through M-tag.
The provincial minister said the infrastructure of toll plazas is also being upgraded.
Under the Punjab Chief Minister's vision, transparency is also being brought to the toll plaza system, he concluded.
