Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has decided to transform the Crime Control Department (CCD) into the province’s premier investigation agency in a major move aimed at strengthening law enforcement and reducing crime across the province.
The decision was taken in view of improving crime control and enhancing public confidence in law-enforcement institutions. Under the plan, the scope and capacity of the CCD will be significantly expanded, and the department will be developed on the model of the world’s five leading crime control agencies.
According to officials, the CCD will be equipped with modern forensic facilities, advanced investigative techniques, artificial intelligence software and the latest intelligence surveillance systems. Modern machinery and equipment will be provided to enhance the department’s ability to track and monitor criminals.
The chief minister has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art CCD headquarters equipped with the latest technology. Additionally, CCD offices, police stations and residential facilities for staff will be established in every division, district and tehsil of Punjab to strengthen operational capacity across the province.
After Eid-ul-Fitr, the provincial government will launch a province-wide campaign against illegal weapons. Authorities are also considering introducing new legislation to curb the possession and use of illegal arms.
Officials said the initiatives taken by the CCD have already contributed to a notable reduction in crime. Compared to last year, robbery incidents have declined by 77 percent, while mobile phone and bag-snatching cases have decreased by 49 percent. Vehicle theft has dropped by 17 percent, attempted murder by 31 percent and kidnapping for ransom by 45 percent.
The chief minister has tasked the CCD with taking strict action against individuals involved in acid attacks against women. Furthermore, approval has been granted to establish a modern research centre within the CCD to support crime prevention and investigation through advanced research and analysis.
The government believes these measures will help strengthen law enforcement and ensure greater public safety across Punjab.
