In a dramatic turn during Monday’s Senate proceedings on the 27th Constitutional Amendment, PTI Senator Saifullah Abro broke ranks with his party and voted in favour of the government-backed bill, a move that triggered swift internal action within Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and resulted in his announcement to resign from the Senate.
Senator Abro, who remained seated in the House after his party staged a walkout, cast his vote alongside the treasury benches.
Speaking to reporters after the session, he openly defended his decision, saying he voted “because of the Pakistan Army” and out of “respect for Field Marshal Asim Munir,” whom he praised for earning global recognition.
Abro said the Pakistan Army had “defeated India” and carried the nation through difficult times, adding that his conscience compelled him to support the amendment.
“I voted in favour because of the Pak Army and Field Marshal Asim Munir,” he stated, insisting he had acted in what he believed was the national interest rather than the party line.
Soon after declaring his stance, Senator Abro announced he would resign from the Senate altogether.
“You should de-notify me,” he said, addressing the Senate Secretariat and signalling he would not continue as a member after going against his party.
Sources within PTI confirmed that the party moved quickly to distance itself from Abro. He was removed from the PTI parliamentary party WhatsApp group within hours of the vote. According to insiders, he was also expelled from all other internal communication groups operated by the party’s Senate wing.
Party sources said the removal was a direct consequence of Abro voting in favour of the constitutional amendment in defiance of PTI’s stated position and its collective walkout from the Senate session.
Senator Abro’s break from party ranks adds a new layer of political tension around the already controversial 27th Amendment, marking one of the most public and immediate fallouts within PTI during the ongoing constitutional overhaul.
