An accused of murder escaped from police custody near Mandhra after he was produced in court and was being shifted to Jhelum Jail, 24NewsHD TV reported on Tuesday.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Malik Hamad, reportedly managed to deceive the police personnel escorting him and fled near Mandhra while being taken to the jail.
The officials said a murder case was registered against Hamad at Sadar Bairuni Police Station in 2024.
He is also facing more than 15 other cases in Rawalpindi.
Sources said a mobile phone had recently been recovered from the suspect at Adiala Jail, following which he was transferred to Jhelum Jail.
He had been shifted to Jhelum only two days earlier.
Police have taken into custody four personnel assigned to guard the suspect.
A search operation is underway in the area to trace and arrest the escaped prisoner.
