Thick snow layers cripple transport as coastal and northern areas suffer extreme weather: Disaster authorities warn of continued risks as roofs collapse and roads remain blocked

According to Japan’s disaster management authorities, continuous snowfall over the past three weeks has claimed at least 46 lives and left 558 people injured across the country.
Officials said that harsh weather conditions have buried large parts of northern Japan under thick layers of snow, severely affecting daily life and emergency response operations.
In Aomori, a key northern regional hub, snowfall has accumulated to nearly four feet, making it one of the worst-hit areas during the ongoing weather crisis.
The heavy snowfall has also disrupted traffic systems in Japan’s coastal regions, where roads have become impassable, and transport services remain suspended in several locations.
Foreign media reported multiple accidents caused by large masses of snow falling from rooftops, damaging property and injuring residents.
Authorities warned that the risk of further casualties remains high as severe weather conditions persist, urging residents to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary travel in affected regions.
