A British media report has claimed that US President Donald Trump instructed top military leadership to prepare a secret plan for a potential attack and takeover of Greenland, prompting strong internal resistance from senior American commanders.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the British media reported that Trump directed the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the US military’s most elite covert unit, to draw up an operational blueprint for a rapid strike on the Arctic territory.
The revelation has reportedly triggered alarm within the highest ranks of the US military. Senior generals and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are said to have dismissed the idea as unlawful, impractical and dangerously destabilising.
They reportedly warned that such an operation would neither win approval from Congress nor withstand the geopolitical consequences for NATO, which would be forced to confront the fallout of an unprecedented American action against a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
According to the British report, military officials attempted to steer Trump toward comparatively less controversial strategic options, including confronting Russia’s so-called “ghost ships” operating in international waters or considering military pressure on Iran.
The claim echoes earlier accounts of tensions between Trump and his national security establishment over the use of military force and unconventional foreign policy proposals.
The White House has not responded to the British media story, and US defence officials have also declined comment, leaving the full extent of the alleged planning unclear.
However, analysts note that the report revives questions about the administration’s approach to military decision-making and the friction that frequently emerged between Trump and America’s top brass.
