Met office issues GLOF alert for GB and KP amid heavy rain forecast

Amid heavy rain and landslide forecast, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 

Met office said a western weather system is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to the country.  The heavy rainfall could increase the risk of glacier melting followed by glacial lake outburst floods. 

The Met office warned that rising water levels in glacial lakes could trigger GLOF incidents. Low-lying areas, streams and riverbanks are also at risk of sudden flash flooding. The weather advisory further cautioned that landslides and mudslides in hilly and mountainous areas. 

The PMD has advised residents, tourists, and travelers to avoid rivers, streams and glacier-prone areas during the alert period. District administrations and rescue agencies have been directed to remain on high alert. The public has been urged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and strictly follow the advisories.
