German prosecutors on Wednesday charged seven people over a series of "left-wing extremist attacks" targeting far-right activists at home and abroad.
All but one of them were accused of belonging to an organisation led by Lina E., who was jailed in 2023 for attacks on neo-Nazis and has become a cause celebre for Germany's far-left.
The group shared a "militant left-wing extremist ideology", federal prosecutors said in a statement.
Its members rejected "the existing democratic constitutional state, the fundamental right to freedom of expression, and the state's monopoly on the use of force".
Among the suspects only partially identified by prosecutors was Johann G., who was said to have been a prominent member of the organisation.
Johann G. was "responsible for planning and carrying out attacks" and allegedly organised combat training sessions together with Paul M.
Prosecutors said Paul M. had been charged with maintaining a "weapons depot" with "blunt instruments, pepper spray, disguise equipment and cell phones, among other things".
The group were accused of carrying out attacks between 2018 and 2023, in Germany and, on one occasion, at a far-right rally in Hungary.
European far-right groups gathered in Budapest in February 2023 to mark the anniversary of an attempt by Nazi forces to break the Soviet siege of the Hungarian capital during World War II.
Paul M., with another group member, was accused of attacking a man at a train station in Budapest around the anniversary and targeting him with pepper spray.
Johann G. and Paul M. were also said to have led an attack on three people at a cafe, kicking and beating the victims.
In Germany, the list of allegations included an October 2019 attack at a restaurant in the eastern city of Eisenach, which was said to be a meeting place for far-right activists.
Johann G. and another suspect, Thomas J., were alleged to have assaulted the owner and several patrons, and ransacked the eatery.
In December of that year, Johann G. allegedly pursued the owner again, beating him with batons together with Paul M., Tobias E. and Julian W.
Johann G., Paul M. and Tobias E. faced charges of attempted murder in addition to causing bodily harm and membership or support of a criminal organisation.
All three, along with Thomas J. were in police custody, having been arrested between October 2024 and January 2025.
The other three suspects charged -- Julian W., Melissa K. and Henry A. -- remained at large, prosecutors said.
