A massive protest erupted at Mayo Hospital as nurses staged demonstrations against disciplinary action taken following a drug reaction incident that allegedly led to two deaths and several severe reactions among patients, reported 24NewsHd TV channel Tuesday.
The protest, led by the Young Nurses Association (YNA), took place in the hospital’s nursing hostel, where a large number of nurses chanted slogans against the Department of Specialized Healthcare.
The unrest comes after an inquiry committee found three nurses guilty of negligence in preparing Ceftriaxone injections, which reportedly caused severe reactions in 16 patients on March 9.
Following the investigation, the hospital administration initiated formal action under the PEDA Act against Sonina Khalid, Hafiza Saima Sahar, and Nazia Hassan, issuing show-cause notices for their alleged failure to ensure proper medication preparation.
The protesting nurses, however, rejected the inquiry findings, claiming they were being made scapegoats to protect those responsible for procuring fake and substandard medicines.
They demanded the government take strict action against those involved in supplying counterfeit drugs instead of punishing frontline healthcare workers.
The situation remains tense as hospital authorities stand by the inquiry’s findings, while the nurses vow to continue their protest until justice is served.
