Singer-actress Hilary Duff has opened up about her strained relationship with her older sister Haylie Duff, revealing that her emotional track We Don't Talk was inspired by their ongoing rift. The song appears on Duff’s newly released album Luck… or Something, marking her first music release in nearly a decade.
During an interview with Anthony Mason on CBS Mornings, Duff confirmed that the deeply personal song reflects the emotional distance between her and her sister.
“It’s definitely about my sister. And just absolutely the most lonely part of my existence is not having my sister in my life at the moment,” Duff admitted.
The singer said she initially struggled with the decision to include such a personal track on the album. However, she ultimately chose to release it because it reflects her reality.
“I really struggled with thinking about including that on the record. But it’s funny so many people are having that experience of existing in the world without their other half,” she said.
Haylie Duff is the older sister of Hilary Duff. While Hilary rose to global fame as the star of the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire, Haylie built a career as a food blogger, television personality and actress.
The sisters were once known for their close bond, frequently appearing together at events and on social media. However, they have not been photographed together since 2019 and appear to have little to no interaction online.
Duff did not reveal the exact reason behind the rift. However, the lyrics of We Don't Talk suggest a painful and distant relationship.
In the song, she sings about wanting to resolve the tension and reconnect: “Let’s have it out… get back to how we were as kids.”
Duff said she is unsure whether her sister will listen to the song or how she might react to it.
“I don’t know if she’ll hear it. I don’t know how she’ll react to it. But it’s a really personal part of my life that doesn’t get to stay personal,” she explained.
The singer added that sharing her experience through music was not meant to criticize her sister but simply reflect her own feelings.
Duff’s sixth studio album, Luck… or Something, is described as her most personal project to date. Along with addressing her relationship with her sister, the album also touches on her family dynamics, including the track The Optimist, which reflects her complicated relationship with her father, Robert Duff.
The album marks Duff’s return to music after nearly a decade, offering fans an intimate glimpse into her personal life and relationships.
